Maori artist dead
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Aug. 5. Mary Wi Repa, a leading Maori landscape artist, sometimes known as New Zealand’s Grandma Moses, died in Auckland recently, aged 67.
Mrs Wi Repa lived her life mostly at Whanarau Bay and Opotiki.
She sold her paintings from a small fruit and softdrink shop on the main East Coast highway at Whanarau Bay, and as the shop became a stopping place for tourist buses, she acquired a reputation overseas for her work. Mary Wi Repa was known as a “straight” landscape artist. She entered the Kelliher Art Exhibition several times, held several exhibitions around the country, and had paintings exhibited in Britain and America. Outside her life as an artist Mrs Wi Repa brought up ten children and took an active part in Maori welfare work on the East Coast. She is survived by seven children and 20 grandchildren.
