(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 3. An Auckland girl who topped the New South Wales midwifery final examinations believes the most important part of her job is helping mothers to relax.

Miss Judy Smith, aged 25 (above), gained the highest pass of the 300 candidates who sat the examinations last month. Miss Smith, who is shown with a baby at the Crown Street Women’s Hospital in Sydney, said: “It’s such a fascinating aspect of nursing.” She decided when she first began nursing in Auckland at the age of 18 that she wanted to specialise in midwifery. Although pleased at her high distinction pass, she thinks "good exams don’t necessarily make a good midwife. “If you can make a mother enjoy having her baby, she will remember it as a tremendous experience 1 instead of a nightmare,” i she said. Miss Smith plans to return j to Auckland.
