Friesians tested for growth rate

Friesian bulls are now being tested for growthrate by the Awahuri Dairy

Research Centre, and semen ■will be available to breeders who want stock mainly

for beef purposes. The director of the Dairy Board’s farm production division (Mr J. W. Stichbury) told the South Island Herd Improvement Association last week that in recent years interest frequently had been expressed in using growth-rate tested Friesians.

Until testing was undertaken, Herefords from a growth-rate tested herd had been used for artificialbreeding work.

To a question, Mr Stichbury said that on the tests the bulls would be classed as average, above average or below average. “From a dairying point of view, these bulls are unproven, but for their purpose, they should be a good bet,” he added.
