Pool site reason

One of the most important reasons for improving the Centennial Pool for the 1974 Commonwealth Games was its central location, Cr H. P. Smith, the Deputy-Mayor and chairman of the City Council’s finance committee, said last evening. “It may not be well known that the Centennial Pool runs at a substantial annual loss, as is the case with all major pools in New Zealand,” Cr Smith said, when replying to a leading article in “The Press.”

“It was thought to be unwise to build another pool some miles from the centre of the city which would also run at a loss.”

Development of an athletic stadium on the Merry Estate instead of spending a lot of money at Lancaster Park was being given careful consideration by the council, Cr Smith said. Some preliminary discussion had already been held with Games representatives. Because talks were to be

held between the Victory Park Board and th Commonwealth Games Committee next Monday, it would not be fair to comment further until after the meeting, he said.
