Intersection query
Sir, —The solution in the Ministry of Transport article on July 24 is. not in keeping with the practice adopted (and enforced) at the intersection of Riccarton Road and Yaldhurst Road. The Road Code states very clearly: “When turning right, give way to all other traffic.” Questions in the “standard driving test” clearly examine a candidate as to his or her knowledge of the rules as i laid down by the Transport Act—with no allowance for what is in actual practice at just one of our intersections. I was under the impression that to depart from the act the Minister of Transport had to be approached, and the act amended and duly gazetted. Just who is right at the intersection in question. The Transport Depart- i ment ruling, the Christchurch I City Council give-way sign, the motorist who abides by the Road Code or the magistrate who fines you for failing to give way (when not changing direction) on the way into Christchurch? —Yours, etc., CONFUSCIOUS. July 28, 1971. [Mr A. I. Garriock, traffic superintendent for the Ministry of Transport, replies: “The diagram quoted by your correspondent shows the correct movements at an uncontrolled intersection where the right-hand rule applies. The intersection of Riccarton and Yaldhurst Roads is not an uncontrolled intersection in that traffic proceeding into Riccarton Borough via the South Road
is controlled by a ‘Give Way’, sign and therefore must give I way to traffic coming from; Yaldhurst Road (on their! left) and right-turning traffic from Riccarton Road into Yaldhurst Road. This is in accordance with the regulations. If ‘Confuscious’ still I does not understand he is l welcome to call and discuss it further.”]
