The litter of protest
The organisers of Friday evening’s protest march in Christchurch will do little for their cause by disclaiming responsibility for the litter their supporters left behind on poles and buildings and on the streets. The City Council has been tolerant of demonstrations; it should not condone indefinitely activities which disfigure the city and add to the council’s work and the ratepayers’ expense. Those who have posters, stickers, and pamphlets printed and distributed are, in part at least, responsible if the result is a mess. Perhaps some, members of university groups that have recently shown their concern for the city by clearing part of the Avon River might be enlisted to help in the task of clearing away the demonstrators’ debris. It is not impossible that some of their fellow-students were among the offenders in Friday’s littering.
