MEET MR TOBY I first met him on my birthday. The gift of a charming little Toby Jug nearly 40 years ago resulted in my becoming an avid collector and enthusiast until I had 270 of these whimisical little fellows in my collection. The-search took me to all parts of New Zealand and even overseas. The pleasure derived was enormous. It appears the first Staffordshire Toby Jugs were made about 1760. They were typically English, dressed in the costume of the time, often with a tri-com hat which formed three admirable spouts, from which to pour precious liquid. The originals are now rare. Many heroes of story and history books are among my collections:—The Mayor, The Vicar, Charles Dickens, Simon the Cellarer, Sir Toby himself, Churchill, Monty, poor old Simple Simon, two faced women and even a two faced man, with a host of others. Reluctantly, I must now dispose of the collection and Messrs R. G. Bell and Co., will be offering it by auction next Wednesday in their rooms at Kaiapoi. Descriptive catalogues are available at their Christchurch or Kaiapoi offices or P.O. Box 13130, Christchurch. —Advt I
