SPEEDING FINES
First month’s total
A reduction in the speed of motorists in Christchurch and on the highways since 1 the introduction of statutory fines a month ago has been , noticed by officers of the Ministry of Transport. Four hundred and sixty- ’ four notices were issued during July in Christchurch, ! Waimairi, Akaroa and Lyttel- , ton and on the West Coast and fines were paid in 225 of the cases. The total amount of the statutory fines Was $10,007, of which $5059 had been paid, said the regional director of road transport (Mr J. F. Thomas) yesterday. Although it appeared that only about 50 per cent of the offenders had paid their fines, Mr Thomas said, it had to be remembered that each motorist was given 21 days in which to pay. Mr Thomas said it appeared that the fines were achieving their purpose and he expressed the hope that this would continue. There did not appear to be any real problems with the system.
