HOCKEY XIs TO MEET

The first of two international women’s hockey teams which will play Canterbury before the international tournament at Auckland from August 19 to September 2, will be seen in Christchurch today. Australia, which should be one of the top sides at the tournament, will test Canterbury’s resources to the fullest. It plays a fast open game, and the players, although not having played together, are fresh from the interstate tournament.

Canterbury had a reasonably successful national tournament in May but has not been in its best form in recent fixtures. However, it will be an advantage that Canterbury is more used to the soft ground conditions at Hospital Comer where the game will be played than the visitors. Canterbury has an experienced team in spite of the fact it will be without its international defenders, Mrs P. Barwick and Mrs A. McKenna, who are both with the New Zealand team.
