First South Island performance

The musical, “Where is the Mayor?” presented by the Bumside High School last evening was bold, brassy and bright in the true American style. Produced by Mr V. J. Catherwood, and under the musical direction of Mr V. A. Ellena, the performance of the musical was the first in the South Island. It is to be hoped that the success of this presentation will encourage other producers to consider it, for although it does not differ from the happy-ever-after format, it has some redeeming qualities.

The most notable feature is the music, which is modem with catchy tunes that make a welcome change from the familiar, over-performed musicals. The concert band was also a welcome relief from school orchestras, as the predominantly brass and saxophone combination was able to cope with the music easily. Karen Feltham, as the dominating Miss Samantha Op? penheimer, was cast expertly in this demanding character part, which she handled with ability and confidence. In her role as secretary to the elus-

ive mayor, Jillian Bartram was attractive and lively, with a warm, well-pitched voice, that stood out for its clarity of tone, although a little more confidence would add to her charm. The “Three Cheers,” Margery Clark, Pam Mcllroy and Gillian Rose, captured the audience with 'their alternately seductive and bouncy song-and-dance routines, resembling typical American cheer-leaders.

“Where is the Mayor?” will be performed again this evening and on Saturday evening at the Bumside High School hall.
