Boy dies of rifle wound
A six-year-old boy died of a rifle wound at a house in Hayton Road, Wigram, about 5.30 last evening. Senior-Sergeant J. P. O’Donovan said it was believed that the dead child and some others were playing with a rifle when it discharged.
The boy was found to be dead by St John Ambulance men. Police took possession of a .303 rifle and a quantity of ammunition.
Police last night would not release the boy’s name until relatives in the North Island had been advised.
An inquest will be opened this morning.
