Provision for handicapped
Special provision for physically handicapped persons may be included in further new buildings to be erected for the Christchurch Teachers’ College at Ham. A recommendation to this effect was passed by last evening’s meeting of the Teachers’ College Council. The council will ask the Department of Education to consider such provision in the remaining stages of the secondary division of the college and the replacement college for the primary division. Th council’s support for special provision for the physically handicapped resulted from a request for such action from the chairman of the architectural barriers committee of the Christchurch Co-ordinating Council for the Handicapped (Mrs A. H. Pickering). Professor H. E. Field, chairman of the Teachers’ College Council, said the need for special consideration for handicapped persons when buildings were designed was “a very important matter.” The council, he said, could say that it found itself in cordial support of Mrs Pickering’s suggestions.
