Bomb hoax arrests

I (N.Z.P.. A Reuter—Copyright» SYDNEY, August 4. Two men were being interviewed in Sydney to- , night by New South Wales police in connection with the Qantas bomb hoax on May 26, it was officially announced.

The chief of the Sydney Criminal Investigation Bureau, Superintendent R. Lendrum, called a press conference to say that two men, one an Englishman, would appear in the Sydney Central Court of petty sessions tomorrow charged with extorting money with menaces from the Australian airline Qantas. “It will be alleged that one of the men arrested will be the man who called himself Mr Brown,” Superintendent Lendrum said.

Superintendent Lendrum continued: “It will also be alleged that the same man collected the money from Captain R. J. Ritchie (the general manager of Qantas).”

He said that the two men, one a 31-year-old Australian labourer and the other a 28-year-old English marine engineer, were arrested this afternoon in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Police took possession of a large sum of money and also a van containing an assortment of property and tools.
