Waimairi rubbish dump

i Sir, Waimairi County ' Council’s rubbish dump hours ; are specifically stated as 10 am. to 5 pm. on Sundays. i Last Sunday we arrived with I a heavily laden hired trailer, ' loaded with rubbish not acceptable by the weekly council collection, several minutes before 5 -pm. and were refused entry. I feel this was caused either by the council’s notice at the dump being a false representation of the “service” offered (dumping , hours), or the council emI ployee on duty was making . sure his departure would not . be delayed. If it was the latter, this person would ■ have the common decency to remember that it is we, the ■ ratepayers, who pay his • wages <md therefore should not have to fight high-handed : bureaucratic attitudes in an effort to keep the county Clean.—Yours, etc., 1 D. PATTERSON. : July 22, 1971. 1 [Mr D. B. Rich, chairman of , the Waimairi County Council, replies: “The custodian at the 1 pit on the Sunday referred to ■ was operating a transistor 1 radio and it was the time - signals broadcast that deter--1 mined the closing time of 5 ' pm. The custodians do not I close the pit before the advertised time to ensure that • their departure is not delayed, though many members i of the public are at times • inconsiderate by arriving just i before, at, pr after the dosing time. The refuse’pit is open

at the week-end for longer hours than pits operated by other authorities, and there is ample time for dumping within these hours.”]
