Navy League report

The policing of New Zealand territorial waters for fishing vessels suspected of poaching could not be done for much longer by aging! motor launches, said the ■ president (Mr L. F. Luxton), in his report to be presented at tomorrow’s annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League. These launches never had been suited to the role of fishery protection, and had limited speed and sea-keeping capabilities, he said. Mr Luxton said this would: be the last occasion on which! a president would report on the work of the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps as part of the league, the administrative responsibility for the corps having passed completely to! the Ministry of Defence. The Canterbury branch of i the Navy League took over! the administration of the Sea Cadet Corps soon after it was formed in 1929, and would continue to provide! headquarters for the corps,! said Mr Luxton. Mr Luxton recommended a strong membership drive during the next year. Unless greater membership was achieved an increase in subscriptions would be necessary.
