Bowling clubs’ membership up
An increase of 37 in the total membership of Canterbury bowling clubs was noted in the report of the retiring president (Mr G. T. Cotton) to the annual meeting of the Christchurch Bowling Centre last evening. The total on March 31 was 5417, compared with 5380 at the same time last year. Fendalton and Elmwood remained the biggest clubs by far, with memberships. of 289 and 246 respectively. Of the 73 clubs affiliated to the centre, 35 had increases in membership.
The statement of accounts showed a loss of 5722.68 but, in spite of this, no increase in levies w'as sought. However, the meeting adopted a motion moved by the treasurer (Mr L. C. Lindley), that entry fees for the centre’s championships be increased. These range from 50c for the open singles to $4 for the Christmas and Easter fours. Similar increases were also approved for champion-of-champions events. Mr Lindley said that the increases w’ould bring in an estimated $llOO extra. A remit presented by the Fendalton Club concerning entries to the three-fours competition was successful. It called for clubs with up to 128 members being allowed to enter not more than two teams, clubs with memberships of between 129 and 192 not more than three teams, and for clubs with 193 or more members not more than four teams. The Fendalton delegate (Mr H. C. Collett), said his club wished to clarify the position in regard to three-four entries, because
there had been some confusion since a new system was introduced in 1968. Officers elected were:President, Mr D. Martin; senior vice-president, Mr J. Owen; junior vice-president, Mr W. Hanger; treasurer, Mr L. C. Lindley; executive, Messrs M. S. Robinson and W. J. Cole; umpire’s association representative, Mr F. Hobbs; Turf Research Association representatives, Messrs H. E. Brandon, D. Miller, W. J. Cole, and G. T. Cotton; selectors, Messrs J. R. Smith, J. A. Maloney, and F. W. Larcombe; match committee, Messrs Moloney, Hanger, Robinson, Cole and K. Perry.
