Civil Defence exercise
About 80 members of several St John ambulance brigade divisions and the Heathcote sector of the Civil Defence organisation last night took part in a civil defence exercise at the Heathcote Valley School.
The exercise simulated the explosion of a boiler in a classroom block at the school. About 25 St John’s cadets and Heathcote Valley schoolchildren acted as victims. They were given first aid by members of die Opawa and Christchurch South combined divisions of the brigade and then cared for by members of the St Matthews nursing division. No-one involved apart from the organiser knew in advance just what was going to happen, said the superintendent of the Opawa combined division (Mr C. B. Williams). The exercise also gave practice to the nurses in taking blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration, he said. Sister Y. Flitcroft of the Princess Margaret Hospital supervised the nursing at the clearing station.
