Standing of N.Z. horses high
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. "It was evident that the standing of the New Zealand thoroughbred with overseas horsemen had never been higher," said the president (Mr R. A. Whyte) in his address to delegates to the Racing Con* ference in Wellington yester* day. Mr Whyte was referring to the national yearling sales, held at Trentham in January, where new records for turnover and aver* age were established. Of the $1,572,800 spent at the sales, $1,203,000 was spent on yearlings for export. “Australia’s quota was $960,000. Japan’s $lOO,OOO. South Africa’s $60,000 and the United States spent $71,000,” said Mr Whyte. “Thailand and Singapore were also represented, but invested on a smaller scale. Australia’s continued support of the sales was the .outcome of the good winning form of New Zealand-breds racing there. Last season, for the first time on record. they won stakes in excess of s2m. Mr Whyte said that during the season certificates of pedigree had been issued for 541 horses sent abroad. Australia was the principal buyer, taking 399 horses, of which 193 were yearlings. Other exports included 16 horses to the United States, 50
to Singapore, 30 to the Philippines, 19 to Thailand, 11 to South Africa, nine to Malaysia, four to Japan, and one each to Western Samoa, Trinidad and Noumea.
It was anticipated that some copies of volume 21 of the New Zealand Stud Book would be available for distribution before the national yearling sales in January. The new volume will contain the complete stud records of 6896 brood mares, an increase of 1183 from the 5713 brood mares which appeared in the previous issue, since 1968, the year that volume 20 was published, 76 stallions and 188 brood mares have been imported.
Mount Eden in U.S. (N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) SAN FRANCISCO. , Mount Eden has arrived In the United States and will soon be delivered to his new owner, Mr W. Rosenberg, who paid SUS3OO,OOO ($NZ267,860) for the stallion, the Associated Press reported. The Australian trainer, E. Sims, and Mount Eden’s groom, T. Donovan, travelled with the horse.
