STYX RIVER FLOODS
Agreement on proposals
There did not appear to be enough justification to restrict the urban development of urban-zoned land in the Styx River catchment, the Waimairi County Council decided on Thursday evening. The council was discussing Christchurch Drainage Board decisions on Styx River flood protection and agreed to tell the board that it would co-operate in ensuring that all land-fill requirements were met, provided this was enforceable, and the board accepted responsibility for disputes.
The council was told that the board’s scheme provided for extensive stopbanks from the floodgates near the mouth to a point three miles and a half upstream, with a break in the bank on the east side in the vicinity of Spencerville Road where the land is higher. Because of work of higher priority, no steps would be taken by the board at this stage, but a review would be made in a year’s time. The council accepted the proposals in principle, but asked the board for joint discussions on various aspects of the scheme.
