<N.Z. Press Association? WELLINGTON, July 16. It was heartening that after so many years of estrangement, contact between the leaders of China and the United States should be re-established, said the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake) today. He was commenting on the announcement that arrangements had been made for President Nixon to visit China next year. “I naturally hope that this development will give new depth to recent tendencies on the part of China towards more relaxed relations with other countries,” Sir Keith Holyoake said. “Vast possibilities for in-
temational peace and security would open up if the traditional friendship between tiie United States and China could be restored.”
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) described Mr Nixon’s acceptance of the invitation to visit China as “a welcome initiative.” “This move must have the effect of reducing tension, and improving relations in a most useful way,” he said.
"ft must also be regarded as an attempt to come to terms with reality, an example that every country could follow,” said Mr Kirk.
