Top young players
The three provinces in the southern zone Rothmans 19-years Rugby league tournament in Christchurch this week-end will start the series on equal terms in one respect—each team includes a player who Ms won selection for his senior representative squad this season. P. MacDonald, a New Zealand 19-years centre last year, scored a try and kicked eight goals to contribute 19 points when West Coast thrashed Otago, 70-2, at Greymouth in May. Two weeks ago N. Tupaea displayed considerable potential when he made his debut on the wing for the Wellington team which retained the Rugby League Cup, 32-18, against Midlands. One of the prop forwards for Canterbury A will be P. C. Cook, who was promoted to the provincial training squad after only a few appearances for the Linwood premier side. He did not appear in any of the fixtures, but the experience should assist with his development as a footballer. West Coast has teen drawn against Canterbury B, and Wellington meets Canterbury A in the first round at the Show Grounds this afternoon. The two winning teams play in the final at Leslie Park, Hornby, tomorrow, the losers opposing each other in the curtain-raiser
