AFRICAN ATHLETICS STARS ON SHOW
(N.Z .P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) t DURHAM (North Carolina). ’ The Pan-Africa-United States international track and field meeting begins today with stars from 14 African nations competing against a U.S. squad which includes four world record holders.
In women’s competition, the American team will meet an invited group of international stars, which includes four Australian girls and a New Zealander, Miss B. Poulsen, from Christchurch, a shot putter. The highlight of the twoday event, is expected to be the men’s 1500-metres which is likely to pit the Olympic champion K. Keino, of Kenya, against M. Liquori of the United States. Liquori is said to be coming to Durham from Europe especially for the event. Keino and Liquori have turned in the fastest times in the world this year in the mile. The United States team, which Will compete in the 18 men’s events, is comprised of athletes who will
go to Cali, Colombia, for the Pan-American Games later this year. The African team, which includes 10 African recordholders, has representatives from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Senegal, Mali, the Malagasy Republic, the United Arab Republic, the Ivory Coast, Chad, Somalia, and Ethiopia. The four world record holders on the United States squad are R. Milbum (110 metres), C. Greene (100 metres), J. Smith (440 yards) and P. Matzdorf (high jump).
The four Australian girls taking part are Misses R. Boyle, A. Ross-Edwards, dis-tance-runner, Miss J. Orr and hurdler Miss D. Pease. In addition there will be women from Ghana, the U.A.R., Uganda, Nigeria, Canada, and the Philippines.
