Young U.K. player leads (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) BIARRITZ (France). The Australian golfer, P. W. Thomson, was one stroke behind the leader at the end of the first round of the French Open golf championship. Thomson had a five-under-par 64 over the 5692-yard course to lie level with C. Clark, of Britain, and G. Baleson, of South Africa. In the lead was Britain’s R. Fidler, playing in his first tournament outside Britain. Lu Liang Huan, of Taiwan, a strong favourite for the title after taking second place behind the American, Lee Trevino, in last week’s British Open, had a 71.
