TANKS FOR IRAN
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
LONDON, July 16.
Britain has agreed to supply Iran with Chieftain tanks, according to informed British sources, who give no details of the deal, except to confirm that a contract for the 52-ton battle tanks has been signed. Earlier this year, newspaper reports said that negotiations were under way between the two countries for the supply of 140 tanks and spare parts.
The reports then said that both Israel and Libya were also anxious to purchase Chieftains, but had been refused because of the likelihood of upsetting the ArabIsraeli balance of power. Iran is considered to be outside the Middle East dispute, and the sale of the tanks will help to maintain stability in the Gulf area, the sources say. , Estimates of the contract price have varied from £2om to £Bom.
