CHARITY TREK AT ARANUI
A trek to assist three different causes at oace is being arranged at Aranui High School.
Called the "Triple Trek,” it will involve nearly all the staff and pupils of Aranui High School. Among the walkers will be the police district commander (Chief Superintendent G. Tait), and the Dean of Christchurch (the Vety Rev. M. L. Underhill), “The target for the trek is to raise over $5000,” said the headmaster of Aranui High Schooi (Mr W. J. A. Bnttenden). "Half of this will go to the AranuirWainoni community centre project, one quarter for certain capital expenses at the school, mainly the instalment of toilets at the swimming pool, and one quarter as the nucleus for a library in Madang, New Guinea, where a former teacher, Mr John Roasanowski is now teaching.” ' The trek had attracted wide community support, he said
The local primary schools were sponsoring a representative each, in most cases their headmaster, and the local clerics were going to march supported by their congregations. Mr Brittenden himself will be sponsored by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) and the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt). ‘"lTie best sponsorship effort so far is one walker who is worth $2OO if the distance is completed,” said Mr Brittenden. “He says he will do it if he has to crawl it.”
The trek is limited to 10 miles and will be three circuits of an area around Cowles Stadium. It is being run by the school’s guidance counsellor and former All Black, Mr W. A. Meates, and will start at 1.30 p.m. on Friday, July 23. The time would be counted as physical education for the whole school, said Mr Brittenden.
