Too many llamas
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, June 20.
The Auckland zoo has too many llamas—27 at the moment, with babies arriving at the rate of one every two months.
The zoo director, Mr D. Wood, said: “We don’t have the room to house them all or money to build more pens. “The males fight among themselves and have to be separated from each other. The only alternative is to mix them with females.”
The 27 llamas and guanacos (a close relative of the llama) are housed in four pens. One pen has 11 animals.
Other New Zealand zoos already have all the llamas they want and freight charges make it uneconomic to sell them overseas. One solution would be to kill the surplus ones. "But we would rather not do this if it can be helped,” said Mr Wood.
