Despite valiant efforts by ground staff, the final stages of the Rothmans South of England lawn tennis championships were beaten by the weather at Eastbourne, 70 miles south-east of London. Four matches the men’s singles semi-finals and final, and the women’s singles final were not played. G. Goven and N. Pilic were knocking up before their semi-final when a further rein squall ended all hopes of play. Goven, Pilic, and the other semi-finalists, A. Gimeno and G. Masters, each received $536 of the prize money. The women’s finalists, Miss F. Durr and Miss J. Dalton collected $547 each.
