Brigadier-General John Donaldson is quoted by the magazine “Life,” today as saying he is confident that he will be exonerated of the charge that he murdered Vietnamese civilians. “A lot of people think that a brigade-commander should stay out of the way when there is a fight going on,” the general is quoted as saying. “I don’t agree. If one of my units got into a fight, I’d go down and give them support fire with my door guns, and they’d appreciate it It would help morale.” The magazine say that Donaldson, who is 47. admitted using his command helicopter to attack the Communists and to resupply his troops, and that he also used it to rescue wounded. He is accused of killing six Vietnamese civilians and of assaulting two others during a three-month period in 1968-69, while he was commander of the Americal Division's 11th Brigade.
