(N.Z. Pre«» AMoeiMlen) WELLINGTON. June 16. Treasury witnesses were cross-examined on the cost of implementing equal pay at the Commission of Inquiry into Equal Pay yesterday. In the cross-examination, costestimates were considered.
The department of Labour’s estimate was ssom, and the Treasury submission agreed with this. A submission put forward by the Employers’ Federation jput the cost at between sl66m and s2oom. An estimate by the Assistant Director of the Institute of Economic Research (Mr W. D. Rose) was between s6om and s7sm.
An investigating officer for the Treasury, Mr R. G. Laking, said ft was important to establish the present ratio of female-to-male earnings, and the percentage increase on this ratio after equal pay.
He said the Treasury would not commit Itself on what the actual percentage might be. But the Treasury would submit a paper to the commission establishing the relationship between a percentage Increase and the resultant cost
Mr Taylor criticised Mr Rose for moving from a ratio base and a nominal rate to another based on actual earnings.
