STUDENTS TO CHINA
Names on June 28
Twenty New Zealand university students who will visit China next month, as well as substitutes, will be announced on June 28. At least three students from Christchurch are expected to be selected, according to the president of the New Zealand University Students’ Association (Mr D. B. Cuthbert). Applications from 210 students included those working for a doctorate or thesis on China, students active in student journalism, and students who could speak Chinese, he said. There had been 56 applicants from Canterbury University, and four from Lincoln College. The trip “inside China,” probably the first by any Western students since the cultural revolution in China in the late 19605, would probably be subsidised by the Chinese Government, . although jio fipai decision had been made yet, Mr Cqthbert said. The selection committee comprises Mr Cuthbert, Mr C. Livesy, vice-president of N.Z.U.SJL, Mr D. Lake, i member of the New ZealandChina Society, and Mr ,J. Shallcrass, a lecturer at Victoria University, Wellington.
