IRRIGATION SCHEME
No report this year
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, June 18.
The report on the feasibility of irrigation in the north central plains area of Canterbury cannot be completed before mid-1972. This was explained in Parliament by the Minister of Work Mr Allen) in answer to a question by Mr M. A. Connelly (Lab., Wigram), who had first tried to have the subject admitted as an Urgent Question last week. "On November 19, I advised the honourable member by letter that the North Canterbury Catchment Board had completed a water resources study of the Waimakariri River,” Mr Allen said. “This showed that only limited amounts of water from this river will be available for irrigation. “As a result I requested the board to extend its survey to include the Rakaia. It has commenced this study, but because of the amount of information to be assembled and analysed, the report on this river cannot be expected before the end of next summer.”
The feasibility of irrigation would then have to be considered in relation to other uses, said the Minister.
