POLICEMEN ACCUSED
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
1 NEW YORK, June 17. Five New York policemen and 13 other men have been indicted by a Bronx County grand jury in connection with an alleged SUSSm-a-year cartheft ring. Three to five cars a day, usually late model Cadillacs and other expensive vehicles, were stolen by the ring, according to the district attorney, Mr Burton Roberts, who says that five other policemen will face departmental, but not criminal, charges because there is insufficient evidence against them to prefer more serious charges. The ring is alleged to have worked from a car-wrecking garage in the Bronx, and to have sold parts to other garages. Sometimes they made as much as SUSI2OO ($1070) on a single car. Three of the policemen are also charged with extorting SUSSOOO from the garage manager threatening to arrest him if he did not cooperate with them. The manager is also indicted.
