Thirteen taken to hospital
Thirteen persons were injured two seriously in road accidents in Christchurch yesterday, and were taken to hospital.
Most of the accidents occurred well into the evening. None of those hurt during the day were admitted. George McDonald, of 113 Chester Street, is on the seriously ill list in the resuscitation ward at Christchurch Hospital with head injuries suffered when he was struck by a bus in Victoria Square. His condition late last evening was fair. STRUCK BY CAR
Also on the seriously ill list is Leonard Atkinson, of 230 Fitzgerald Avenue, who was injured when struck by a car at the intersection of
Fitzgerald Avenue and Gloucester Street. His condition is fair.
Another man, William Alfred Mansfield, was injured when the cycle he was riding and a car collided at the intersection of Grove Road and Hannon Street, Addington. Mr Mansfield, who suffered leg injuries, is in a satisfactory condition at the Christchurch Hospital. Two men were injured in a similar accident in Mooray Avenue, Bumside. Lindsay Jones, of 20 Mooray Avenue, and Mr W. Beyers, of 61 Breens Road, Bishopdale, both suffered head and leg injuries. Later in the evening, Mr A. Ridder, of 27 Glynne Crescent, Hoon Hay, suffered head injuries when the motor-cycle he was riding and a car collided at the intersection of Manchester and Worcester Streets. CAR HITS FENCE
Soon after 11 p.m., two persons were taken to hospital after the car in which they were travelling struck a fence in Waltham Road.
Five other persons were treated at the Christchurch Hospital and discharged after accidents in the city during the day.
Prison tender.—A tender of $936,921 by M. L. Paynter, Ltd, has been accepted by the Ministry of Works for the construction of the new women’s prison at Paparua.
