By-election in Britain

LONDON, June 18.
The Labour Party retained the traditionally • Socialist seat of Hayes and Harlington, Middlesex, in a byelection yesterday, with a majority double that obtained in the Genera! Election of June last year. There was a swing to Labour of 16.5 per cent, giving weight to recent public opinion'polls, which have indicated an 18 per cent lead for the Socialists over the Conservatives.
