FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A large anticyclone extends from the central Tasman Sea over northern and central New Zealand, and a strong disturbed west to south-west airstream flows over the area south and south-east of the South Island. Forecast:

Canterbury and the Kaikoura coast.— Light or moderate variable winds; mainly fine, although becoming rather cloudy about the coast during the day; perhaps a few drizzle patches mainly south of Banks Peninsula ; rather mild by day, cool tonight, some frosts inland.

Central Marlborough, the Sounds, Nelson, Buller and North Westland.—Light or moderate variable winds; cloudy areas, scattered light drizzle at first this morning but mainly fine; moderate temperatures.

South Westland.—Light or moderate variable winds; increasing cloud, some scattered rain developing; moderate temperatures. Outlook.—Scattered low cloud and drizzle about the Canterbury coast night and morning, otherwise fair; clearing in South Westland ; mainly fine elsewhere.
