Wage agreements
Sir,—The Government has been poorly served by its new Remuneration Authority, which should have had sufficient nous to call both sides together before making a decision to pass the buck to the Minister. Likewise, the F.O.L. should have quietly taken the matter up with all concerned before uttering silly, pugnacious statements which simply build up defensive attitudes all round. The F.O.L. should wake up and do its homework. Seven per cent plus more if you can prove a case is better than average over the years as the Auckland local bodies demonstrate. The sight of alleged industrial leaders running about like chickens with their heads off is a sorry one. Now they propose to replace ! group non-thinking by the collective non-thinking of a i national conference. Far better for the people they represent and the country if they spent the $12,000 to $14,000 involved on some elementary treatise on economics.—Yours, etc., QUO VADIS. June 18, 1971.
