Special C.O.R.S.O. effort

A special effort has been made by C.0.R.5.0. organisers this year to ensure that today’s house-to-house appeal, the largest held in Christchurch, runs smoothly and that all areas are covered.

Almost 4000 collectors will call on houses in the Christchurch area. They will wear two identification badges—one for the ordinary appeal and the other to remind people of the special appeal for Pakistan refugee relief. Donations may be made to either or both of these appeals.

“Except for the two world wars, this is the biggest refugee problem this century, and it is growing daily. It calls for a special response from people,” said the organiser for the CanterburyWestland area (Mr R. A. Consedine) yesterday. The national target for this special appeal is $lOO,OOO, but as half of this has been met by a Government donation, only $50,000 remains to be raised throughout New Zealand.

Development projects carried out by C.0.R.5.0. are expected to cost the organisation about $850,000 this year, and it is hoped that $112,000 of this can be raised in the Canterbury and Westland area. Christchurch’s urban target for this appeal is $70,000.

“So far the response has been very good. We have received about $4OOO already, some of which is earmarked for refugees in India,” said Mr Consedine.

Fund-raising efforts During the week several fund-raising efforts for Pakistan refugee relief have been going on in Christchurch. Girls at St Mary’s College contributed $2OO, and other schools have indicated that they will have projects under

; way during the next few weeks. ’ Last evening at the Bishop--1 dale Shopping Centre, tins i and packets of food, representing family meals, were 1 auctioned by Mr R. Glubb, of ’ St Gregory’s parish. The ven- ' ture was organised by the > Bishopdale Council of Churches. Last week the Catholic Overseas Aid I committee sent a cheque for . $950 for the appeal. “With the money received for refugee relief work in ■ India, first priority will be [ given to getting tents, I blankets, baby food, and milk I powder," said Mr Consedine. . “At the moment we are ex-

ploring the possibilities of getting tents from the Army or commercially, and we are hoping the Government will make an aeroplane available to take the equipment.” Money collected in the ordinary C.0.R.5.0. appeal would go towards overseas development aid projects, he said. “We are coming to realise more and more that we have a particular responsibility in th A Pacific and gradually C.0.R.5.0. is allocating more funds for agricultural, educational, and hunger relief work there." “Let’s Hoe into Hunger,” the slogan for the C.0.R.5.0. campaign this year, will be on collectors’ bags, posters, and tickets handed out when people contribute.

On Thursday evening a late attempt was made to print nearly 5000 extra envelopes for country distribution, and these were delivered with the co-operation of the Post Office rural delivery service yesterday morning. However, because this had to be done in a hurry, only the address of C.0.R.5.0. has been printed on the envelope. Those persons requiring a receipt will need to put their names and addresses on the back of the envelope, and if cash or a bank-note is sent, the envelope should be registered. C.0.R.5.0. will pay for the postage and registration. If a collector misses any house, the householder is requested to send the envelope with the donation to C.0.R.5.0., P.O. Box 1905, Christchurch.
