Record fourth win
When he won the Rover Scout Harrier Club’s annual Holloway Memorial Race for the fourth time recently, W. K. Kennedy (Christchurch) set a record for the most individual wins since the inception of the event in 1952. The latest race was run over a new 10-mile course from the Blue Skies scout camp, Kaiapoi. Kennedy ran the distance in 53min 45sec. Kennedy’s other wins were over the former 12.3-mile course at Opawa-St Martins in 1963, 1967, and 1968. He holds the record of 76min for the old course.
Before his latest win, Kennedy shared the honour of the most wins with J. D. Macdonald (Olympic). Hie 30-year-old Kennedy has had some outstanding wins ranging from track distances up to the marathon. A lecturer in electrical engineering at the University of Canterbury, he ran as impressively on Saturday as ever he has done and it would not surprise to see him making a strong bid for inclusion in the representative team for coming fixtures. The photograph shows Kennedy running through the rough bordering the Waimakariri River, well clear of the field with about two miles to go in the latest Holloway race.
