LOOKING UP

tty

Robyn Jenkin

This provincial coat of arms can be seen on many of the early buildings in Christchurch which came under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Council, and the centrepiece is a copy of the seal of the Canterbury Association, the original of which is now housing in the Canterbury Museum.

The coat of arms can be seen in many places—above the old children’s library In Hereford Street, the Registrar’s Office at Canterbury University, Christ-

church Girls’ High School and the Supreme Court, to mention a few. But when I look at the coat of arms on the Supreme Court building (top) and that on the old Girls’ High School at the comer of Hereford Street and Rolleston Avenue, I can’t help feeling the sculptor had a sense of humour. Where else could ope find such a severe angel but on a court of law, and that demure little miss could only belong to a girls’ school.
