Motherhood endowment
Sir, —I read Elsie Locke’s article advocating motherhood endowment with interest and indignation. Couid the writer explain why I, a heavily-taxed bachelor who has absolutely no desire to increase the population of this already overcrowded planet, should suffer a further drop in my standard of living so that women can produce more children in financial security? Women do not have to have children, and if they choose to do so it is hardly for patriotic reasons. In my opinion any married couple who cannot afford to bring up their own children without sponging on others should use self-control or contraceptives.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED. June 16, 1971.
