Prices Act amendment

OY.Z. Freu Association)

WELLINGTON, June 16. The Control of Prices Amendment Bill introduced into Parliament today was designed to remedy a deficiency in the Control of Prices Act, 1947, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton). Introducing the bill, Mr Shelton said it defined “performance of services.” The act applied to prices charged for the performance of services as well as the sale of goods. “Some doubt exists whether the act contains authority for the surveillance of the prices or charges for certain items which may not fit within either of the categories of goods or services, within the ordinary meaning of these terms," Mr Shelton said.

“The premium charged on an insurance policy would represent an example of an item which, I understand, comes neither within the category of a price for goods, or a charge for services.”
