Auckland wins
(N.2. Pre** Auoelotion)
NEW PLYMOUTH.
Auckland had no trouble in beating Taranaki, 17-9, in a Rugby match at New Plymouth today, in which rain restricted much positive play. Auckland led 8-6 after an even first half, but in the second spell Taranaki rarely looked like posing a threat. Not only did the Auckland pack control much of the play, but its back-line also was much more inventive than Taranaki's.
It was a disappointing performance by Taranaki, which plays the British Isles in its next match. The 'Auckland lock, P. Whiting, emerged decisively ahead of his Taranaki rival, A. E. Smith, while B. L. Muller was undistinguished at prop for Taranaki. For Auckland, tries were scored by K. R. Carrington, R. Whatman and Williams. Whatman converted a try and drop-kicked a goal, while P. H. Murdoch also drop-kicked a goal. For Taranaki, D. J. Wards scored a try, F. W. Hill kicked a penalty goal, and P. Martin drop-kicked a goal.
