Protests on tours

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SUVA. The Fiji Women's Hockey Association will protest about the entry of an all-white South African team in the world tournament in New Zealand in August. The meeting of the association’s executive in Suva decided a Fiji team should go to the tournament But the president (Mrs Raddock) said Fiji’s two representatives to the International Women’s Hockey Federation conference in Auckland during the tournament would "protest against the inclusion this year of an all-European South African team in the tournament." They would request that any participation by South Africa in future tournaments be by a team chosen from all races. The Fiji Y.W.C.A., through its national executive director, Miss R. Lechte, protested against South Africa’s inclusion. Golf too And in Wellington, a letter expressing concern that an “all-white” South African golf team would be invited to play in an international tournament in Auckland in October, has been sent to the president of the New Zealand Golf Association (Mr J. G. Slade), according to the Press Association.

The letter, from the secretary of the Citizens* Association for Racial Equality (Mr T. O. Newnham), seeks information regarding the selection of the team which would represent South Africa in the tournament

“We trust no team purporting to represent South Africa will be invited to New Zealand by your association unless it is fairly selected and fully representative of all South Africans irrespective of race. We would also point out the extreme difficulty of these criteria being met in the present apartheid conditions which exist in South Africa,” Mr Newnham said in his letter.
