ONE TON CUP
Defence in 1972 likely (N.Z. Press A*an.—Copyright) SYDNEY. The One Ton Cup, the international yachting trophy won by the Sydney yacht Stormy Petrel in Auckland in March, almost certainly will be defended in Sydney in December, 1972. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, nominated by the skipper of Stormy Petrel, S. Fischer, to conduct the contest, has not yet officially announced the date. Yachting sources said the C.Y.C. had suggested to the perpetual owners of the trophy, Cercle de la Voile de Paris, two alternative dates for next year, in February and December.
The French club had asked for more time to consider them so that it could seek opinion from other European clubs, the sources said.
But, with time running out for the compiling of next season’s programme, the C.Y.C. is likely to announce the defence date as being December, 1972, the sources added.
The cup rules require only that the defending club gives public notice of the date and immediately informs the French club.
