Award to General
Major-General W. B. Thomas, the New Zealander who commands the British Far East Land Forces, has been created a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB.) in the military division of the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in Britain. General Thomas, who was bom in Nelson, is a veteran of the Second World War campaigns in Greece, Crete and Italy with the 23rd New Zealand Infantry Battalion. He transferred to the British Army in 1947 and saw active service in Kenya and Malaya. General Thomas L the author of two books — “Dare To Be Free,” an account of his escape from the Germans in Greece; and “The Touch of Pitch,” a novel based on the Mau Mau emergency.
He was appointed to his present post in October last year. He is based in Singapore,
