Raw sugar

Sir, —Having purchased raw sugar regularly every week for the last feW years at 8c per lb, I am now advised that as soon as present stocks are used up the new price will be 15c per lb. This is not because sugar prices have risen but because our local store (Westport) has been told it can no longer receive the raw sugar in bulk, but must accept it prepackaged. Surely something should be done to prevent such a ridiculous increase. The housewife is to pay 7c for the packaging, and will then have to add to the world’s pollution when she bums or destroys it How many other price rises are caused by such futile arrangements?—Yours, etc., DISTURBED HOUSEWIFE. June 11, 1971.

(Mr E. Keys, South Island sales manager for the New Zealand Sugar Company, Ltd, replies: “Raw sugar is available and will continue to be available from this company in 701 b bags and is also available both from this company and other packing firms in 11b packets. Grocers have the choice of purchasing raw sugar in 701 b bags and repacking into small packets or purchasing raw sugar in lib packets. This company has no control over the price which the grocer charges his customers for raw sugar."]
