New airfield to open

The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) will open the Canterbury Aero Club’s satellite training field at West Melton on July 17.

Work began on the field a year ago .and in that time three runways have been constructed which give six directional approaches covering the prevailing and strong winds encountered in the area. Some work remains to be done on the third runway but this will be completed for the opening. The runways are grasssurfaced and have been built on a compacted earth base, and one has been sealed for a length of 2000 ft The field, which has been in limited use for the last few months, has cost $30,000. Voluntary labour was used where possible.
