Tamarillos a good purchase this week

Tamarillos, Chinese gooseberries (kiwi fruit), cauliflowers, and brussels sprouts are the best buys on the Christchurch fruit and vegetable markets this week. Vegetables generally are in good supply. Tamarillos are selling to $2.20 a case wholesale, and 15c to 25c lb retail according to size and quality. They are good not only for stewing, but also fried with bacon, in pies, chutney, and sauce, cold in salads, and for p variety of other dishes. Chinese gooseberries are retailing this week at 25c per lb. VEGETABLES Good quality cauliflower js in plentiful supply, and is wholesaling at 50c to $1 a case. Wholesale prices for brussels sprouts are between 80c a bag and $2 a case. Cabbage and silver beet are both plentiful, wholesaling at 45c to 85c a case and 65c a case respectively. Good quality celery is selling at 80c a case wholesale, and 23c to 25c a bunch retail.

Outside cultivated spinach is now finished, but hot house varieties have become available at $1.50 for 10 to 12 bunches wholesale. Onions are wholesaling at $2 a bag, and a good supply of carrots at $1 a case. Parsnips are still dear at 75c to $1.20 a case wholesale. Potatoes are now in fair supply, and are wholesaling at $2.40 a case or bag.

More yams are available at $2 a case, while all varieties of pumpkins are in the shops —crown pumpkins retailing at 5c per lb, and butternut and buttercup at 9c per lb. There is a good demand for swedes, which are wholesaling at $1.60 a bag. Beetroot is selling at 80c a small case, loose white turnips at 80c a case, and green broccoli at 17c per lb, all wholesale. There is a fair demand for lettuces, wholesaling at 95c a case. Spring onions are in short supply at $1.30 a dozen bunches wholesale. Rhubarb Is wholesaling for $1.90 a dozen bunches. Radishes are wholesaling for ,45c to 75c a dozen bunches. New season’s hot-house tomatoes are available at; 35c per lb wholesale. Mushrooms, in good supply, are wholesaling at 45c per lb and hot-house cucumbers to $l.BO a carton of six. Capsicums are plentiful at 30c per lb retail. ;> ORANGES SHIPMENT A good supply oFCalifomian oranges has just arrived in Christchurch, the last shipment of the season. The Australian season begins about the end of June. A good shipment of bananas from Ecuador has been late arriving but should be in the shops next week. A shipment of Island grapefruit is expected. New Zealand grapefruit, suitable for marmalade, is wholesaling at $7 to $7.60 a case.
