Chance for chess win
(N.Z. Pre** Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA. New Zealand’s prospects of winning the Australian universities chess championship have improved with an upset win by Adelaide over Monash. The New Zealand team has now scored 15} points, with two games unfinished. Monash, favoured to win, has scored 11} points with , three games unfinished, but has still to play a further round. New Zealand has played all its rounds.
The Monash team, if unbeaten in the remaining games, could score 18} points against New Zealand’s possible score of 17} points If it wins its two unfinished games.
New Zealand’s prospects depend on whether Monash or Adelaide wins a yet unfinished game.
Sportsman.—The AU Black flanker, L A. Kirkpatrick, has been elected Gisborne “Sports* man of the Year” lor 1871. His opponents were the Queen’s Prize rifleman, G. Fuller, the national “iron man” surf cham* eon. B. Hutchings, and the leadg croquet player, R. Clarke.
