SKIN POOL RESULTS

In a report on the second pool operated by the New Zealand Skin Pool, Mr B. H. Palmer, representing fanner interests, told the executive committee of the Dominion Meat and Wool Council of Federated farmers that throughput had increased by 40 per cent over the first pool so that it had been possible to make larger offerings which had attracted higher prices from overseas buyers. The profit had consequently improved and the supervisors had paid a bonus of 10 per cent on initial payments. Mr Palmer said that the first pool had covered North Canterbury, Mid-

Canterbury, South Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough and operations had since been extended to include Southland and Hawke's Bay. It was now intended to consolidate in the present areas and to expand as provinces of Federated Farmers considered the time opportune. Noting that the profitability of pool operations depended on both the quantity and quality of the skins handled, Mr Palmer said that the supervisors intended to impress on members that proper drying and the elimination of weevil damage could increase the value of skins by up to 50 per cent.
